The bodhrán in traditional Irish music is a heartbeat, a pulse that guides the music, and a rhythmic gateway to the trad community come together for the love and joy of playing. If you’ve been captivated by the beat of the bodhrán, this class is for you. Taught in the Kerry style, you’ll learn the musical patterns that accompany jigs, reels, and more.
Elizabeth’s introduction to the bodhrán was in the film, The Magdalene Sisters, and from that moment, she was on a mission to learn how to play this captivating instrument. First a student at Siamsa, she quickly went on to take private lessons, which led to various local performances, and then to teaching others how to play the bodhrán.
Over the past 20 years, Elizabeth Johnston has taught widely in the creative fields. She also wrote a book that took her research to Ireland, amongst other destinations, and in 2013 she created the micro-film, Keepsake, based on a poem she wrote about her grandmother. The score for the short film was composed by her bodhrán tutor, Fred Graham, and brought to life with the help of former Siamsa teacher Gord Fisch and fiddler Sarah Frank.
